California Child Abuse Identification & Reporting
These guidelines are issued by the California Department of Education (CDE), in conjunction with the California Department of Social Services, to help all persons, particularly those persons who work in our children’s schools, to be able to identify signs of suspected cases of child abuse and/or child neglect and to have the tools to know how to make a report to the proper authorities. These guidelines are issued in conjunction with an extensive training module, specifically aimed at training school employees and educators on their obligations as mandated reporters of child abuse, which can be located online at California Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training.

Culturally Responsive Teaching & the brain
A foundational premise of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain is that relationships in the form of learning partnerships are the starting point of becoming culturally responsive as an educator. In this blogcast, I talk about the why and how of becoming more responsive starting with these three strategies: Humanize your interactions with all students. Use the Neuroscience of Trust as your first CRT tool. Practice touching the spirit by igniting positive emotions.

Happily Family
You are interested in the science of parenting. You’re curious about what attachment, emotional intelligence, psychology, and brain science can tell us about how to raise kids. You have kids that are more sensitive, strong-willed, bright, or spirited than others (and sometimes the advice in “traditional” parenting sources just doesn’t work for you, or your child). You want to raise kids who are resilient and empowered in today’s more complicated world. You’d like to be able to prepare and reassure your kids. You strive to use effective alternatives to threats and bribes and want to address challenging behaviors with connection and communication (without passing on your own baggage).

Understood: Understanding IEPs
For kids to receive services, they need an IEP — an Individualized Education Program. If your child has been evaluated, the process of getting an IEP has already begun. But there’s still a lot to learn about how the IEP process works and what your role will be.

Pacer Center Champions for children with disabilities
Although IEP forms vary from one district to the next, all must include the requirements defined in federal and state laws. This resource covers all the required parts of an IEP that are outlined in the federal regulations and gives an example of how an IEP form may look. Some sections of the IEP require discussion, but the documentation of the discussion on the IEP form may be optional. School districts will want to document that a particular requirement was discussed.
